ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 1

PROJECT 1: SELF-EXPRESSION THROUGH OBJECT

The first project of studio is unmistakably about the self, there will be a lot of focus on the self part in this semester. The final product is achieved through the exploration and creative representation of self, it can be various art form which include sculpture or performance.

I have gone through the process of idea generating but I have come out with a product too symbolistic. I found a way to counter this problem and abstracting conceptual narratives is to show the pieces of my work first and find a way to connect them only at the end. Because if I give the final work, people would just see the final work and not the pieces that made them. Abstract means separated from embodment, turns out the correct presentation I should give is the other way round. For example, rewind the movie first, then play the movie from the beginning.

Before we even started the project, we are to get some inspiration by building a space with strings attached together. My team and I had found a nice spot in campus and we simply pick a few trees to start our spiderweb canopy, we were able to distribute the workforce and work together because the aim is to involve everyone in the spatial expressing process.

In this project, I continue to learn what is conceptual narratives and storylines based on the self. By understanding the role of scale and proportion in the relationship between human body and a designed space, I am able to tell how does the body inform the space and how does the space inform the body. Ekphrasis descibing a work of art, produced as a rhetorical exercise. It is the process of producing architectural space involving a lot of brain storming and problem solving between two individuals. The Ekphrasis expresses the combine individuality of two person as being outspoken when confronted with critics, by recognizing our's similarities and diffrences, we understand that we can learn from each other to achieve the same goal in aspects of life.

PROJECT 3: SPACE FOR THE SELF- MY CITY DREAMSPACE

In this final project, we have to design a dreamspace in an imaginary city on an abandoned plot. At first, we need to understand the site and explore the context of our cityscape. Then we produce the necessary site materials, which is our site model.

Emma is a character from the movie “Steamboy,”she  is a supporting character in the movie. She appears only in the scene at the beginning of the movie where she helped the protagonist  as a friend to escape a house, she stayed in Manchester while the protagonist  leave for London.

Her reappearance occurs in the climax of the movie where the main protagonist is saving the city of London.  The space can be access from all around the streets and a pathway is left open for pedestrian to experience the building from the side. There are positive spaces for people to gather and negative spaces to move to a destination, the observatory deck is where Emma observes the street from above and go to help whoever is in need of assistance. The picture windows frame views of people moving about in the space, it stimulates curiosity as the stairs to the upper deck is denied from the windows below. The dynamic shape of the concrete structure gives the building a sense of movement and the perforated metal sheets are the pauses which gives the building an overall distinct feature.

The repetition uses of the spirals creating circles of spaces ensures a unit is connected to the whole outlook of the building.

Upon finishing this assignment, I am able to identify, articulate and apply basic design principles in spatial organization and relationships. Furthermore, I understand how to select and apply materials to embody and enhance the sensory experience of the space.
