BUILDING SCIENCE 1
This subject introduce us to the factors that affect the thermal performance of buildings. We learn to create acceptable designs which are sustainable and comfortable. The emphasis is on creating acceptable indoor thermal conditions thus minimizing the use of space heating and cooling. We are also advice to refer to MS1525 which provides guidelines to creating a more sustainable design in Malaysia
PROJECT 1: CASE STUDY ON PASSIVE DESIGN/ COOLING STRATEGIES
In a group of 6 person, we visited the Greentech Building which is previously the Pusat Tenaga Malaysia to study its Passive Design incorporated by the builders and architect. We were forturnate enough to join another group of students who are studying masters and also acompanied by their lecturer. The Passive Design features of the building is the shading devices used and also the use of daylighting in the interior of the building. We collected the data and record the details of the site to further explain the design strategy of the passive design.
Through analysis, we found that the strategies used in this building is to lower down the energy use but still maintain the thermal comfort inside the building and decreases the electrical fee all year round. We get to identified multiple passive design features in the green building and also understand the principles of heat transfer in relation to building and people throught calculations. All of the understandings enable me to determine the design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to MS1525 , UBBL, GBI and Green Mark standards by using specific software.
